  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Rae came to Australia in 1839 to take up a position with the North British Australasian Loan and Investment Company. From 1843 to 1857 he was the first full-time town clerk of Sydney. He produced the letterpress for John Skinner Prout's 'Sydney Illustrated' and published books of poetry. Rae was also an artist and photographer.
  • Scope and Content
    Transcription of part 4 of John Rae's diary of his overseas tour. Parts 1-3 are located in the Mitchell Library at MLMSS 4472. Rae describes his tour through Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands, commenting in particular on art works. He then spent two weeks in England before embarking for Australia on the 'Cuzco'. The diary ends on 24 April when he returned to work in Sydney.
