  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Rae came to Australia in 1839 to take up a position with the North British Australasian Loan and Investment Company. From 1843 to 1857 he was the first full-time town clerk of Sydney. He produced the letterpress for John Skinner Prout's 'Sydney Illustrated' and published books of poetry. Rae was also an artist and photographer.
  • Scope and Content
    Diary of overseas tour in three volumes : part 1: America; part 2: From New York to Liverpool (and tour of Great Britain); part 3: Continental. The journey began on 27 March 1879 when Rae sailed from Sydney on the 'Australia'. Part 3 ends as he leaves Paris for Strasburg.
