The portrait is not signed, dated or titled.
Attributed to Edward Dalton after comparison with other works in the collection inscribed by, or attributed to, Dalton (reference: P2/148, P2/187, ML 513, ML 516) and reference to a label which accompanies the portrait and reads: "Portrait in Crayon of Honble James Norton M.L.C., of N.S.W. by Dalton. 1862. Sydney. N.S.W."
The subject of the portrait appears to be James Norton, the elder, 1795-1862, M.L.C. 1856-1861 (cf. Bust of James Norton, the elder, P2/N) rather than of James Norton, the younger, 1824-1906, M.L.C. 1879-1906 (cf. photographs of James Norton, the younger, P3/N, P1/N).
A second label accompanies the portrait and reads: "Rev Knight". James Norton, the elder, was "Registrar of the diocese of Sydney for many years" (The Nortons of Sussex (Eng.) and New South Wales. Sydney, 1912, p.5 ML ref. A929.2/N889/1A2) but the identity of Rev. Knight and the reason for the label bearing his name have not been established.
