John Derek Richardson (1921-1995), physician and sex therapist, was born in Thorner, Yorkshire. He studied Chemistry at Cambridge (BA, 1943) and Medicine at the London Hospital (MRCS, LRCP, 1951; MB, B Chir, 1952). He married a nurse, Pamela Durrant, in 1952. He was a general practitioner, chiefly in Islip, Oxford, for ten years. Richardson with his wife and four young children emigrated to Australia in 1966. He practised in Cootamundra, N.S.W., and in the mid-1970s moved to Sydney where his specialised practice in sexual therapy and interpersonal and marital relations was established. He was foundation member of the Australian Society of Sex Educators, Researchers and Therapists and of the Australian Centre for Sexual Health at St Luke's Hospital, Darlinghurst. In 1994 he was awarded an honorary fellowship by the Royal Australian College of General Practitoners.
