Jozef Vissel has been a commercial and advertising photographer for over 40 years. Born in the Netherlands, he trained in the Amsterdam studio of Jan Schiet and worked in England for two years before migrating to Australia in 1960. He worked as a commercial photographer at Douglass Baglin's studio and then for six years as a stills photographer for Artransa Park Television in Frenchs Forest. In 1968 he struck out on his own at Pat Purcell's old studio in Elizabeth Street, working for leading companies and advertising agencies. He freelanced for the Australian Tourist Commission, the Freelance Photographers Guild in New York and the Photo Library of Australia in North Sydney. As rents went up, he briefly shared a studio with Robert McFarlane at Robert Walker's in Surry Hills. He joined Macquarie University as a photographer on 1974, recording university events, student life and personalities for the next 20 years before retirement. In 1965, Asahi magazine published his photographs in a series entitled Younger Promising Photographers in the World. He published two books, The Tongans and a light-hearted publication the Down Under T-shirt Thing, both in the 1960s.
