    Born in 1932 to immigrant parents, Manuel Aroney spent his early years in Mackay, Queensland before enrolling at Sydney University to study science in 1951. After graduation he became a lecturer and later Professor of Chemistry at the university. He married Ann Pascalis in 1960 and the pair had three children. Trips to his parents' birth place, Greece, and Europe generally, followed. He was made OBE in 1980, AM in 1989, and Commander of the Order of the Phoenix (awarded by the President of the Hellenic Republic) in 1998. Manuel Aroney died in 2011.
