Charles Findlay Bentley (1921-1986), educationist, was born in West Walsend, N.S.W.. He was educated at Newcastle Boys' High School and undertook a number of general and vocationally oriented post-school courses. Between 1937 and 1956 he held a number of clerical positions, rising to Chief Clerk, with J. & A. Brown and Abermain Seaham Collieries Ltd, subsequently Coal and Allied Sales Ltd. He had served as a radar mechanic in the Royal Australian Air Force in Papua New Guinea during the war.

Bentley was Regional Secretary of the Workers' Educational Association (W.E.A.) of New South Wales (Hunter Region), 1956-1965, during which time he chaired a committee seeking to establish a university in Newcastle. He then became State General Secretary until 1981. Bentley had been awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1969, taken up the following year to study 'Aspects of Adult Education in North America and Great Britain'. In 1974 he received a UNESCO travel grant to study developments in trade union education in England. In 1981 he was appointed Administrative Officer of Sydney University's then Department of Adult Education and later the Centre for Continuing Education.

William Charles Henry (Harry) Eddy (1913-1973) was one of Bentley's longtime friends and a W.E.A. colleague. He corresponded with Bentley during the research for his book on the dismissal of Professor Sydney Sparks Orr from the Chair of Philosophy at the University of Tasmania in 1956.

    W. A. (Bill) McRae, another friend and W.E.A. colleague of Bentley's, was a Life Member of the Association, former President of the Hunter Region, founding member of the Temple Bookshop Board and a State Executive member.
