Born in Scotland a son of Alexander Carse, a painter of Scottish genre scenes. He arrived in Australia probably 1867 when he is known to have been in South Australia. He was a foundation member of the Victorian Academy of Arts in 1870 and a foundation member of the Art Society of New South Wales when it was formed in 1880 by a group of professional artists. During the later part of his life Carse lived in Mosman Bay, probably with long-time friend the painter George Podmore. He died in 1900 from the affects of alcohol -- Dictionary of Australian Artists / Joan Kerr, 1992, p. 137.
