- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
Charles Francis Greville (1749-1809), second son of the Earl of Warwick, was a member of the Royal Horticultural Society, the Linnean Society and other natural history societies. In 1780 he became a Lord of the Admiralty. He was a friend of Sir Joseph Banks and a supporter of William Bligh. - Scope and Content10 Sept. 1808; Autograph letter, signed, written from Government House, Sydney (8 pages). Bligh relates the circumstances of his seizure by the New South Corps on 26 Jan. 1808 and subsequent house arrest, blaming the events on the machinations of John Macarthur. He justifies his government of the colony and claims to have gained the support of the people through his suppression of the monopoly on spirits, his encouragement of agriculture, and other measures. Bligh thanks Greville for his support and states that he has sent mineral specimens for Greville's collection.
