James Mitchell (1792-1869) was born in Fife, Scotland. He joined the Army Medical Corps in 1810, and arrived in Sydney in 1821 as assistant surgeon to the 48th Regiment. He was surgeon at Sydney Hospital and had a private practice. He became a landowner and industrialist in the Hunter Valley. In 1833 he married Augusta Scott. Their son, David Scott Mitchell was born in 1836. - Scope and ContentThe grant of arms recites Mitchell's parentage, notes that he has taken the name of Scott-Mitchell out of respect to his wife's family, and describes and illustrates the arms granted. A red wax impression of the College of Arms seal, in a tin cylinder, accompanies the document.
