Edward Tregurtha was born in Cornwall in 1803. In 1812 he went to sea and for two years served on various transport ships in European waters. Between 1814 and 1815 he served in the Royal Navy. Following his discharge he made several more voyages in trading vessels. In 1820 he joined the Honourable East India Company serving on the Farquharson, Golconda, Lord Lyndoch, Coldstream, Coromandel and Sulmany, and rising to Chief Officer. In 1831 he became part owner and captain of the brig Caroline which he sailed to Sydney and then on a whaling voyage for two years in the Western Pacific. After putting in to Hobart he returned to England. In 1835 he emigrated to Tasmania where he became joint owner of the brig Henry and set up as a colonial trader and merchant. He retired from the sea in 1839 and set up business as a shipping agent in Launceston. In 1851 he went to the Victorian goldfields. He was appointed shipping master of Launceston in 1858 and died in 1880. - Scope and ContentIncludes accounts of Tregurtha's early life at sea, service in the Royal Navy and East India Company, voyages in the Caroline and Henry, life in Tasmania and visit to the gold fields.
