  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

John Bingle (1796-1882), sailor, merchant and landholder, was born at Kent, England, the son of John Rayden Bingle. Bingle trained as a merchant mariner and arrived at Port Jackson in 1821. Shortly after his arrival Governor Brisbane commissioned Bingle to survey the coast to Moreton Bay looking for fresh water. In 1822 he was permitted to build a vessel for coastal trade. He established Bingle & Co. in Newcastle providing the first regular trading service between Sydney and Newcastle. After his marriage to Mary Cross in 1824, Bingle acquired eighteen hundred acres of land in the Upper Hunter Valley district. He named the property 'Puen Buen'. In 1837 Bingle and his family returned to England to live but returned to Australia in 1842. After selling `Puen Buen' Bingle established a business in Newcastle and remained a prominent member of the local community. In 1873 he published a history of Newcastle, Past and present records of Newcastle. John Bingle died in 1882 survived by his wife and three children (John Rayden, Mary Elizabeth, and Sarah Cross) -- Reference, Australian Dictionary of Biography, Vol 1. 1788-1850.
