  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Tom Lake (1913-2006), actor and radio broadcaster, was born in Marrickville, NSW. In his twenties, Lake moved to Melbourne where he worked in a mental hospital and joined amateur theatre groups. He broke into radio as an announcer and freelance actor. He also performed in several stage plays produced by the Russian Latvian emigre Dolia Ribush. During World War II he enlisted in the Civilian Military Forces and served in Australia. In 1944 he returned to Sydney and joined the Mercury Theatre. It was there that he met fellow actor, Peter Finch, and in 1948 sailed to England with him and his wife, Tamara Tchinarova. Lake worked as a market researcher in London between stints as a BBC announcer and theatre reviewer, and cycling trips around Europe. In 1961 he met up again with Australian actor and flamenco devotee, Trader Faulkner, whom he had known in Sydney. In the early 1960s Lake studied photography and undertook commissions from his fellow actors. He returned to Australia in 1968 after more than nine months travelling overland from London through Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He lived in Melbourne from 1971, appeared in films and television drama, and contributed interviews to ABC Radio music and theatre programmes and a weekly talk, 'Australian Perspective', for Radio Australia. In September 1986 Lake settled in Sydney, where he took up residence in the Goodwin Anglican Retirement Village, Woollahra. He was a programme presenter and interviewer for radio station 2MBS-FM over the last two decades of his life.
