    James Eckford (1810-1881) born in India graduated from the University of Edingburgh 1830 and arrived in Australia as ship's surgeon on the `Duchess of Northumberland' 1835. In 1841 he married Elizabeth Caroline Montgomery (d.1900) daughter of Frederick Campbell-Montgomery and together had fourteen children (Frederick Montgomery, Marian E., Robert Cathcart, Anna Luisa, Edward James Simpson, Mary Emily, Arthur Eglinton Montgomery, James Heatley Montgomery, Caroline Augusta Sarah, Conway Heatley Montgomery, Elizabeth, Clara, Eleanor Kennedy, Norah). The family left Sydney and arrived in Tasmania aboard the `Emma' in 1848
