The Sobraon was built in 1866 and gained a reputation as the fastest passenger sailing ship on the London-Australia route. She was bought by the NSW government in 1891 and anchored in Sydney Harbour as a school ship for delinquent boys.
  • Scope and Content
The Sobraon Occasional was a newspaper issued on board ship during the outward voyage to Melbourne from 7 October to 26 December 1875. It was produced in a small number of manuscript copies which were circulated to pasengers. When the ship reached Melbourne in late 1875 copies were printed as souvenirs. This set was owned by one of the passengers, P. M. Bassano. It was annotated in pencil by him and is accompanied by some personal papers: a photograph of the ship, a letter dated 22 & 29 December 1875, a log of the voyage, manuscript shipboard concert programs and a plan of cabins.
