  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

June Salter's (1932-2001) career began in 1956 during the golden era of radio appearing in dramas such as Martin's Corner (2UW), Undercover Carson, Shadows of Doubt (2GB) and the celebrated Blue Hills. Her transition from radio to stage performances and television began with popular revues at Sydney's Phillip Street Theatre where she later appeared in Channel 7's first broadcast. Her greatest triumph on the small screen was the successful 1960s Mavis Bramston Show, Australia's first satirical TV series. This led to a further role as Freda Lucas in the ABC long running series `Certain women' for which she won a Television Society Award. In 1982 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia.
Other notable successes were her performance as Queen Mary in Crown Matrimonial, with Ruth Cracknell as eccentric spinsters in Lettice and Lovage and Mrs Danver's in the stage version of Rebecca. She also appeared in many successful television soaps including Murder Call, Cop Shop, The Sullivans, A Country Practice, The Restless Years and most recently All Saints. -- SMH 17 Sept. 2001, p.38
