James Busby (1802-1871) was the British Resident in New Zealand from 1833 to 1840. The printed declaration which he issued in May 1835 was part of his efforts to defeat claims by French adventurer Charles de Thierry that he (Thierry) had bought 40,000 acres of land at Hokianga from Maori chiefs and had been appointed sovereign chief of all the islands. - Scope and ContentPrinted notice with title: 'The British Resident at New Zealand, to His Britannic Majesty's subjects, who are residing or trading in New Zealand'. Two identical copies on a large folded sheet, printed at Paihia at the Press of the Church Missionary Society. The notice denounces the claims to sovereignty of Baron Charles de Thierry.
