  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Arthur Phillip was appointed first Governor of the colony of New South Wales on 12 October 1786. He was commander of the First Fleet which sailed from Spithead on 31 May 1787 and disembarked at Port Jackson, New South Wales, on 26 January 1788. In December 1792, Phillip returned to England, resigning his post as Governor on 23 July 1793. He died in 1814.

    Commission, from King George III, on parchment. Those named in the commission as members of a Vice Admiralty Court are Arthur Phillip, Robert Ross, Andrew Miller, Augustus Alt, John Hunter, William Bradley, Philip Gidley King, George William Maxwell and Henry Lidgbird Ball. The document is signed by Godfrey Lee Farrant, Registrar.
