    HMS Donegal was the former French ship La Hoche which was captured by the British in 1798. John Airey was badly wounded in an engagement with the French off the West Indies on 6 February 1806.

    Warrant appointing John Airey as master of HMS Donegal (spelt Donnegal on document), signed 'Nelson & Bronte', on board HMS Victory. Includes an annotation, which has been crossed through: 'in Donnegal 2 years & 2 months'.
