Irene Mitchell, actor, director and producer was a well known actor in Melbourne during the 1930s. During the Second World War she became stage manager at the Melbourne Little Theatre and directed many of its productions. After the war she continued her association with the Little Theatre becoming its artistic director in 1956.

First edition of Shipwreck (Sydney: The Shepherd Press, 1947), inscribed by the author Douglas Stewart to Irene Mitchell, the producer of the 1950 production at the Melbourne Little Theatre. The text is extensively annotated in pencil with production and direction notes. Also included are 14 watercolour sketches for costumes, a program and newscuttings relating to the production and Douglas Stewart.
