  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Richard Denis Meagher (1866-1931) was a solicitor and politician. In 1895 he represented George Dean who was accused of poisoning his wife. The following year Meagher was charged with conspiracy over his handling of the case and was struck off the roll of solicitors. After his many applications for readmission as a solicitor were refused, he was reinstated by special act of Parliament in 1920. Meagher was an alderman on Sydney City Council from 1901 to 1920, holding the office of Lord Mayor from 1916 to 1917. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Sydney-Phillip, 1895; Tweed, 1898-1904; and Phillip, 1907-1917; and Speaker from 1913 to 1917. From 1917 to 1920 he was a member of the Legislative Council.
  • Scope and Content
Broadside text begins: 'Conspiracy: R.D. Meagher, convicted. Ex-solicitor Meagher conspires with wife poisoner against innocent woman. The famous Surry Hills Case. Meagher returns to the scene of his crime'. The unknown writer attempts to convince voters that they should not re-elect Meagher as an alderman in the forthcoming Sydney Council elections.
