  • General note

The collage is composed from painted paper cuttings, predominantly yellow and pink, and colour reproductions of flower photographs and van Gogh self-portraits. The name "Vincent" is applied in collage across the lower part of the composition in yellow letters with black shading. In a "thought balloon" emanating from van Gogh's self-portrait is transcribed an excerpt from a letter written at Arles in 1888: "i have a terrible lucity at moments, when nature is so glorious in those days I am hardly concious of myself and the picture comes to me like in a dream ..." [spelling as in artwork].

It is unclear when this collage was made, but it appears to be the original design for a poster published by Big O Posters Ltd in London in 1968 (see National Gallery of Australia collections database).

It had apparently hung in the Yellow House, in Macleay Street, Potts Point. It was given to the vendor by Martin Sharp, around 1972, as the Yellow House was dissolving.
