In 1999 and 2000 the printed books collection of John Joseph Quinn was listed and made available on the State Library of New South Wales' Webcat (electronic catalogue of printed material). With this was found manuscript material and some printed ephemera and these together make up these papers.

John Joseph Quinn (1879-1954) was born in Sydney and attended St Aloysius' College and Sydney University, graduating in Arts in 1905 and law in 1908. In 1908 he joined the staff of the Public Library of New South Wales, and later, the parliament of New South Wales, where he became Chief Librarian in 1922, a post he retained until his retirement in 1944
