Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was born in Florence, Italy on May 12 1820. She established the Nightingale Training School at St Thomas, London from funds raised during the Crimean War. At the request of Colonial Secretary Henry Parkes six English nurses (Lucy Osburn, Haldane Turriff, Mary Baker, Eliza Blundell, Annie Miller, Bessie Chant) selected by Florence Nightingale were sent to Sydney to train Australian nurses at the Sydney Infirmary and Dispensary. - Scope and Content1866-1882; Correspondence relating to nursing training in the Colony, 1866-1869; and to the Royal Commission into Public Charities, 1873, at which Dr Alfred Roberts gave evidence on Lucy Osburn's management of the Infirmary.
