  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

John Graham was born about 1800 in Newry, County Down, Ireland. He arrived in Sydney in 1825 on a seven year sentence for stealing 6 pounds of hemp. In 1826 he received a second conviction for theft and was shipped to the penal settlement at Moreton Bay. A year later Graham absconded into the bush and lived with a tribe of Aboriginal people for six years before returning to Moreton Bay. In 1836 he rescued Eliza Fraser and three other survivors from the wreck of the Stirling Castle who had been held captive by Aborigines. He was returned to Sydney where he unsuccessfully petitioned the governor, Sir Richard Bourke, for his freedom. In 1837 he was rewarded with a ticket of leave and 10 pounds.
