  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

On 13 February 1834 ten convicts seized the government brig Frederick which was about to sail on her maiden voyage from Macquarie Harbour to Hobart. While the captain was waiting for the wind to change Porter and his companions overwhelmed the guard and crew and abandoned them on the shore. Eventually the castaways reached the Van Diemen's Land Company's base at Cape Grim on the north coast. Meanwhile the convicts sailed the brig across the Pacific before scuttling her off the coast of Chile and making their way in the whaleboat to Valdivia. There they assumed new identities as shipwrecked sailors.
