  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Patrick Shepherd, politician and seed and plant merchant, established PLC Shepherd & Co., Seedman and Plant Merchants in Sydney with nurseries at Bowral and Colo Vale. He was a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly, 1874-77 (representing Nepean) and the NSW Legislative Council, 1878-1903.
  • Scope and Content
    Scrapbook compiled by Patrick Shepherd. Includes newscuttings, manuscript poems, original drawings, woodcuts and lithographs. Subject matter includes cricket, Japan, Crimean War, ships, lotteries, theatre, natural history, politics, current affairs etc.
    Original drawings include:
    Chart of the Aird River, New Guinea by Captain Francis Blackwood, relating to a skirmish between HMS Kitty and a fleet of indigeneous canoes, ca. 1844. A sketch of the incident titled "Kitty and her followers" appears at the top of the chart.
    Sketch of a paddle steamer titled "Ark, Capt. Noah CB. on a cruize".
    Sketch titled "Proposed Improvements in Hyde Park".
    Advertisement [?] for "Sign of V.R. Smoking Divan ... patronised by the Nobility, Dr Lang, W. Nash Esq., Lola Montes and King Bungaree". Pictured are a bust of Queen Victoria smoking a pipe and a shop [?].
    Woodcut:
    "The Old Commodore". Concerns the death of Billy Blue.
    Lithographs include:
    "Jacky Jacky. Expedition of Kennedy. March 16th 1849" (drawn by Charles Rodius).
    "Dr. Leichhardt 1846" (drawn by Charles Rodius).
