- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
William (Billy) Elton (1849-1903) was a leading comedian for John Hollingshead at the London Gaiety Theatre during the 1870's and 1880's. He had been in Australia since 1886 and joined the Royal Comic Opera Company the following year for leading roles in the Australian premieres of Princess Ida and The Yeomen of the Guard. He was soon became a firm favourite in Australia and, a little while later, New Zealand. He returned to England in 1892 and joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1897.
