Scope and Content
Notebook used by Leichhardt to enter, under various headings, meteorological reports, observations, extracts from books read, remarks made by others especially by the Rev. W.B. Clarke, lists of books lent and journey expenses. Notes are in German, English and French.
Leichhardt later used the blank pages to make copies of letters sent, 8 Sept. 1846-17 Oct. 1847, and undated (pages 46-56, 191-193, 195-204). Correspondents include W.B. Clarke, Daniel Bunce, John Roper and William Westgarth.
The notebook includes a draft of Leichhardt's lectures to the Sydney School of Arts, 18 and 25 Aug. 1846, on his Port Essington expedition. It also includes the manuscript of his 'Beitrage zur Geologie von Australien' (pages 235-248, 252-262, 282-298, 302-330).

'D.S. Mitchell' signature on inside back cover.
A typed contents list prepared at the Library is inserted in the volume.
This volume seems to be the one referred to by W.B. Clarke in the preface to 'Notes on the Geology of parts of New South Wales and Queensland made in 1842-3 by Ludwig Leichhardt' and described as containing 'a mixed journal of his adventures, letters to myself and others and notes on botany and geology'.
Leichhardt's lectures were published as: Lectures delivered by Ludwig Leichhardt at the Sydney School of Arts...August, 1846, Sydney: W. Baker, 1846 (Mitchell Library location 984/L).
Beitrage zur Geologie von Australien was published in German after Leichhardt's death. The Mitchell Library holds a copy reprinted in 1855 (location DSM/Q559.01/L).
