  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

David Burn (1798-1875) first arrived in Hobart in 1826. He made several visits to Scotland and England before settling at 'Rotherwood' on the River Ouse. In 1842 he accompanied Sir John and Lady Franklin on their visit to the west coast of Tasmania. In the 1840s he was beset by financial difficulties and migrated to Auckland in 1847 where he worked as an editor and journalist on several newspapers until his retirement in 1865. He died in Auckland in 1875. Burn wrote books, plays, verse, and articles for magazines and newspapers.
  • Scope and Content
29 Mar.-20 May 1842; Cover title: 'Letters from Tasmania, by the author of "Van Diemen's Land, Moral, Physical and Political", Overland expedition of Sir John and Lady Franklin and suite to Macquarie Harbour and the Western Division of the Island'.
Burn explains that he has written his account in the form of a diary from the 'pencilled records' of his 'rude note-book'. He joined the governor's party on 29 March 1842. They travelled overland to Macquarie Harbour, and some of the party returned to Hobart on the schooner 'Eliza'. During the voyage the 'Eliza' explored Port Davey, arriving back at Hobart on 20 May 1842.
