  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Rev. Thomas Sharpe arrived on Norfolk Island as chaplain on 21 April 1837. He clashed with superintendent Alexander Maconochie who, in December 1840, requested his removal. Sharpe was later the rector of All Saint's parish which included Bathurst, and in 1845 built the house in Bathurst now known as Miss Traill's House.
  • Scope and Content
Sharpe's journal covers the period from April 1837, the day he landed on Norfolk Island, until 31 December 1840, just before he left the Island. There are no entries for some dates. Sharpe describes his impressions on arriving on the Island, commenting on buildings and natural features. He writes in detail of his religious duties and his views of the penal system. He is critical of the administrations of commandants Major Joseph Anderson and Captain Alexander Maconochie.
Includes critical notes on the journal by historian G.C. Henderson (B 217 item 6).
