  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Architect Jorn Utzon purchased 2.43 hectares of land in Kara Crescent, Bayview (northern suburbs of Sydney) in the early 1960s. He first submitted a development proposal to Warringah Council in February 1964. He hoped to develop a complex of three distinct units on the large site. The largest unit was the main living quarters, which was supported by a guest house for his two older children, and a studio. It was a proposal which worried the Council, who considered he was building two dwellings. Utzon submitted three more proposals, which considerably refined the initial design. Ultimately the residence was not built, because of his removal from the Opera House project in 1966. -- Reference Source: The masterpiece : Jorn Utzon : a secret life / Philip Drew. These sketches appear to be preliminary ideas for the project, although one is dated 7 June 1965. However its core elements can be clearly discerned, with an early formulation of the distinctive plywood U-shaped beam (which was a key feature of the design) evident. Similarly the sketches show Utzon's working through the footprints of the various elements of the design on the site.-- Curator's acquisition notes, 2006 (ML06/84)
