  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Phillips joined Ludwig Leichhardt, referred to as the Doctor in the journal, on his first expedition to Port Essington in 1844-1845. Little appears to be known about Phillips. According to Alec H. Chisholm in his book, Strange New World: The Adventures of John Gilbert and Ludwig Leichhardt (1941), pp. 345-347, Phillips was convicted of forgery in London and sentenced to life imprisonment in Australia in 1838. Phillips asserts that he volunteered his services to Leichhardt, but makes no reference to his convict status. Leichhardt attested to Phillips' good conduct on the expedition and this testimonial may have contributed to a conditional pardon being granted to a man of the same name in 1846. For reference to another William Phillips (1803-1871), botanist, who had befriended Leichhardt in the 1840s, see Journal and Proceedings of the Royal Society of New South Wales, vol. 55, 1921, p. 165.
