ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

David Moore (1927-2005) was Australia's most renowned and widely-travelled photojournalist. He began working as a professional photographer in the studio of Russell Roberts in 1947. In 1948 he moved to the Sydney studio of Max Dupain where he remained for three years, during which time the pair formed a close association which endured for decades. The subsequent seven years Moore spent working as a freelance photojournalist in London for publications including Life, Time, Fortune and the Observer, before returning to Australia in 1958.
In 1989 he was inducted into an Honorary Fellowship of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography, while in 2002 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters at the University of New South Wales.
His photographs are held by major institutions in Australia and overseas, including the National Gallery of Australia, the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC, and Le Bibliotheque nationale de France. The Art Gallery of NSW mounted a retrospective of his work in 1988. In 1993-94, the State Library of NSW exhibited Sydney Harbour - 50 years of photography, followed by David Moore: 100 photographs, in 2005. A major retrospective of his work curated by Gael Newton, The Spread of Time: The photography of David Moore, opened at the National Gallery of Australia two days after his death in 2005.
David chose the 100 photographs he would like to be remembered by, and chose to have them printed in black & white, even though some of the originals were in colour. He chose the person he wanted to print the negatives and the sales outlets, thereby bringing the wishes of the photographer to fruition, unlike other retrospective editions. -- Biographical notes from the Mitchell file (July 2006)

No. ten of ten artist's proof editions, inscribed in pencil on the verso, printed by Sandy Barnard, 2005. A limited edition of 90 was printed at the same time for sale in the State Library of NSW Shop, Josef Lebovic Gallery (Sydney), Christine Abrahams Gallery (Melbourne) and by Lisa Jasprizza.
Each photograph titled, editioned, dated 2005 (printing date) on the verso, each blind embossed with circular chop "David Moore Estate Authorised Edition" and signed "L.Moore" in the lower right hand corner
The limited edition was printed on 40 x 51 cm. paper with a white border of 100 mm. When the State Library agreed to mount the exhibition, it was decided to print larger image sizes for the gallery spaces. The paper size remained the same but the borders were decreased to about 20 mm.
