    The governors and administrators of New South Wales from 1803 to 1810 were: Governor Philip Gidley King, 28 Sept. 1800-12 Aug. 1806; Governor William Bligh, 13 Aug. 1806-26 Jan. 1808; Lieutenant Colonel George Johnston (administrator), 26 Jan. 1808-28 July 1808; Major Joseph Foveaux (administrator), 29 July 1808-8 Jan. 1809; Colonel William Paterson (administrator), 9 Jan. 1809-1 Dec. 1821; Governor Lachlan Macquarie, 1 Jan. 1810-1 Dec. 1821.

    A collection of correspondence of early governors and administrators of New South Wales. The documents are listed in the order in which they appear in the volume.
    9 May 1803; Copy of letter from Governor Philip Gidley King to Lord Hobart, in answer to letter no.2 dated Aug. 1802, dealing mainly with the finances of the colony (pp.1-8)
    24 June 1803; Copy of letter from Lord Hobart to Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Foveaux concerning the proposed removal of a part of the establishment at Norfolk Island to Port Dalrymple, with instructions for him to succeed William Paterson as Lieutenant Governor at headquarters (pp.9-10b)
    7 May 1803; Voucher for payment of men employed in caulking HMAV Porpoise. Signed by William Scott, countersigned by P.G. King (pp.11-12)

    31 May 1803; Receipted invoice for goods supplied by John Palmer from government stores for HMAV Porpoise; prices certified by Richard Atkins and Thomas Smyth; receipt of delivery certified by P.G. King; and certified by George Lodge and Thomas James that the goods have been placed on board the Porpoise; voucher, 31 May 1803 (pp.15-16)
    17 Sept. 1804; Letter from Governor P.G. King to Lieutenant Governor Joseph Foveaux with instructions for removing part of the establishment at Norfolk Island to Port Dalrymple, and regretting the need for Foveaux to leave Norfolk Island because of ill health (pp.17-18a)
    22 Apr.-16 May 1805; Bonds (3) against shipping unauthorised persons from Sydney on the ships 'Ann', 'Sydney' and schooner 'Venus'. Signatories include Simeon Lord, D.D. Mann, William Stewart, John Palmer, Austin Forrest and John Calder. (pp.19-20a)
    16 Apr. 1804; Letter from Governor P.G. King to Lieutenant Governor David Collins forwarding an agreement with Robert Campbell for delivery of cattle per 'Lady Barlow' at Sullivan Cove (pp.23-24). A copy of the agreement is printed in Historical Records of Australia vol.5 pp.21-22.
    30 Apr. 1805; Letter from Governor P.G. King to Captain John Piper concerning affairs at Norfolk Island and measures for the removal of settlers to Port Dalrymple. King also refers to Piper's appointment and to the landing of spirits at Norfolk Island from the American ship 'Union'. (pp.25-30). This letter is printed in Historical Records of Australia vol.5 pp.330-333.
    6 Jan. 1805; Letter from Governor P.G. King to the officer administering the government of Norfolk Island giving instructions for the transfer of persons to Port Dalrymple and for regulating shipping at Norfolk Island (pp.33-36)
    18 Aug., 30 Sept. 1805; Copy of letter from Governor P.G. King to Captain John Piper with further instructions concerning the removal of settlers and stock from Norfolk Island. King refers to the production of crops and pork on Norfolk Island and mentions convicts Henry Brown Hayes, Maurice Margarot, Michael Robinson and William Maum, and Aboriginals Bull Dog and Musquito. This copy of a letter originally sent on the 'Buffalo', is an enclosure to King's letter of 30 Sept. and includes a marginal note dated 30 Sept. (pp.37-41)

    26 Nov. 1803; Extracts of a letter from Governor P.G. King to Daniel Woodriff respecting measures to be adopted for removing the settlers from Port Phillip to Port Dalrymple or Hobart (pp.57-60)
    31 Aug. 1804; 'A list of witnesses...' requested to be summoned, Aug. 31 1804, with questions that would have been put to Thomas Arundell, Richard Atkins, Thomas Rickerby and others (pp.61-66). Endorsed 'no.8'. [Note: This paper relates to a case against Dennis McCarty for upholding the writer's two convict servants who refused to perform their task. The writer's name is not given but a comparison with a collection of papers in the same handwriting, bearing numbers 1-5, 12, 14, etc. in the Chief Secretary's Papers Bundle 1 no.100, shows it to belong to the same set of documents, the plaintiff being Martin Mason, assistant surgeon in NSW].

He expresses an unfavourable opinion of Henry Brown Hayes and gives information regarding prisoners at Newcastle (pp.203-206)
    10 Sept. 1809; Letter from William Lawson, Commandant at Newcastle, to James Finucane, reporting that the escaped convicts have given themselves up, that cedar and lime are ready for shipping, and that limeburning has stopped because of a lack of men (pp.207-208)
    21 June 1807; Letter from Governor P.G. King to Lieutenant John Oxley requiring signed statements from all officers of HMS Buffalo stating whether they were advised by him to keep Captain John Houston out of the gun-room mess.     David Scott Mitchell bookplate on front endpaper; bound by Corbett Binder, Sydney.
    This volume was microfilmed by the Archives Authority of New South Wales as reel 6040 of the Colonial Secretary's papers. Some of the documents in the volume are listed in 'Summary of Colonial Records in the Colonial Secretary's Office, 1788-1826', an inventory made between 1888 and 1890 of documents then held in the Colonial Secretary's Office. At a later date these documents were removed from the main sequence of papers and catalogued separately. The letters in this volume are indexed in the online Index to the Colonial Secretary's Papers, 1788-1825 on the State Records of New South Wales website.
