  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Sir Charles Oakeley (1751-1826), an official of the East India Company, was Governor of Madras from 1790 to 1795. Henry Dundas (later created Viscount Melville) was Home Secretary from 1791 to 1794.
  • Scope and Content
Autograph letter signed by Charles Oakeley, Madras, 19 Jan. 1792, advising Henry Dundas that he is enclosing in haste a 'rough and incorrect' copy of a narrative received from Batavia which may be the first news of the Pandora'a fate to reach Dundas. The enclosed 8 page narrative relates how the Pandora, commanded by Captain Edward Edwards, left England on 7 November 1790 in search of the Bounty mutineers and arrived in Tahiti on 23 March 1791. It tells the story of the mutineers' attempts to settle on Toobouai (Tupai, Society Islands), the capture of 14 mutineers, the wreck of the Pandora and the arrival of the survivors in Coupang, Timor. There they found William and Mary Bryant and other convicts who had escaped from Sydney. Taking the convicts with them, Edwards and the crew went to Batavia to await passage to England.
Includes a copy of the description of the item in Francis Edwards, Ltd, Booksellers, catalogue no. 505 'Australasia', 1928. Includes notes by Hugh Wright, Mitchell Librarian, Aug. 1928, and Margaret Flower, of the Mitchell Library, Oct. 1943, stating that the information in the account was probably supplied by an officer of the Pandora other than Captain Edwards, and that the narrative was probably written in early January 1792.
