  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Trained as a sculptor in Rome, Achille Simonetti migrated to Australia in 1871 at the instigation of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane. His work won prizes at several exhibitions in the years following his move to Sydney in 1874. He taught at the school established by the NSW Academy of Art in 1875, and completed many public and private commissions including the monument to Governor Phillip in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney -- for further information about Achille Simonetti, see: Australian Dictionary of Biography, vol. 6, 1851-1890.
