Reverend William Clarkson Hawkins was born in 1824 at Great Barr near Walsall, Staffordshire England to Thomas Hawkins, and Ann (Smith). His siblings were Thomas, Eliza, and Harriet.

W. C. Hawkins arrived in Adelaide in 1849, before moving to Morpeth, New South Wales, in 1850. He married Maria (Holmes) in 1852. They had 7 children, Thomas (1853-1907), Anna Maria (b. 1855), Edwin (1857-1887), Theodore (1860-1921), Florence (1862-1950), Clarence (1869-1885), and Adeline (1877-1952).

Personal papers of the Hawkins and related families, particularly of the Reverend William Clarkson Hawkins, and his daughter Florence Hawkins; letters, including photocopies of letters from Henry Kendall, and love letters; biographical notes written by Reverend G.T.G. Irwin on behalf of Florence Bertha Chew (granddaughter of William and Maria), and Neta Mackinnon (great granddaughter); typescript copy from the personal diary of William Clarkson Hawkins; typescript of records written by Florence Hawkins as related by her father; photographs including T.
