    Objects - 1 silver coffee pot - 25 cm. (high) x 26 cm. (tip of spout to opposite extremity of handle) x 17 cm. (wide) - Elaborately worked with floral designs. Handle is trimmed with two rings of ivory. Lid is hinged. Crest on right side portrays a male bust, bearded, with scroll above reading "SPE EXPECTO"; on left side crest depicts a hand holding a quill, with scroll above reading "FAVENTE DEO SUPERO"; being the crests of Livingstone and Mitchell respectively

  • General note

    As Surveyor-General of NSW, Mitchell led several expeditions including that to the Western District of Victoria, which he named Australia Felix. He was knighted as Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell in 1839
    This coffee pot was presented to Major Mitchell by London merchants led by the Earl of Clarendon
    Maker is probably John Walton, Newcastle (UK) or James Welshman, Bath (UK), 1833. Marks: IW, lion passant, date letter S, king's head, leopard's head. Reference: Stories in Silver exhibition (curated by Brian Eggleton), State Library of NSW, 1996
