Martha Ford (nee Wilcox), and her husband Samuel Ford, were missionaries with the Church Missionary Society. Samuel Ford was New Zealand's first resident medical surgeon. - Scope and ContentNovember 1836 - 9 July 1837; Journal kept by Martha Ford during a voyage on the City of Edinburgh which left Gravesend in December 1836 and sailed via the Cape of Good Hope to Sydney. She was accompanied by her husband, Samuel Ford, their infant son and a maidservant. During the voyage the Fords became extremely friendly with Arthur Wilcox Manning who was visiting his father in Sydney and he drew a compass in the journal which he described "Drawn for his sister Martha by AWM." He subsequently emigrated to New South Wales. On arrival in Sydney on 24 May 1837 the Fords took up residence in Pitt Street and Martha writes about their daily lives including socialising with well known colonial families such as the Kings, Cowpers and Mannings. The final entry in the journal was made on 9 July 1837. In August the Fords left Sydney for the Bay of Islands. (Call No.: MLMSS 7605: Issue microfilm copy at CY 4567, frames 1-85)
