  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Walter Bunning established his architectural firm in 1945 in Sydney and invited Charles Madden into a partnership in 1946. Significant projects included Anzac House, College Street, Sydney (1957), Liner House, Bridge Street, Sydney (1960), and the National Library of Australia, Canberra (1968). -- Biographical note from PXD 720/66

Kevin John Smith joined Bunning & Madden in 1950 and was made partner in 1960. Charles Madden died July 1960 and the firm was named Bunning Smith Potter and Madden. With the building of the National Library, the firm opened a Canberra office under Noel Potter.

In the mid-1970's Walter Bunning left the firm because of ill-health, and died 13 Oct 1977. The Sydney and Canberra offices separated and Kevin Smith took the name of the Sydney firm back to Bunning and Madden. Noel Potter made the same name change in Canberra.

Kevin Smith's experience included the design of office buildings, department stores, schools and halls of residence. Projects he was involved with include the National Library, International House (University of Sydney), Bruce Hall (Australian National University), Anzac House and Liner House (Sydney).

The Chatswood office closed ca. 1991 and Kevin Smith stored this collection at home. He died 22 Apr 2006 and the collection was presented to the State Library of New South Wales. -- Notes from Mitchell File (Aug 2007)
