  Thomas Bryant Wilson left London for Auckland in April 1863. On his arrival in New Zealand he was recruited to fight in the Maori Wars. He later went to Tahiti where he worked as a storekeeper on a cotton plantation for three years. After working and trading in New Caledonia, Fiji and other parts of the Pacific he arrived in Lord Howe Island in 1878. He became a horticulturalist in partnership with Captain Richard Armstrong and in 1879 was appointed the first schoolmaster. The following year he married Mary Thompson.
• Scope and Content
  Wilson's diary describes events on Lord Howe Island including his observation of Halley's Comet in September 1882 and the arrival, in December 1882, of a government survey party to observe the Transit of Venus. The diary gives a detailed account of Wilson's horticultural activities which included the cultivation of fruit and vegetables, and documents the development of the Kentia palm seed industry. The volume includes financial accounts, especially for palm seed sales, and the names and addresses of nurseries and other customers for palm seeds in many parts of the world. It also includes a copy of a letter from Wilson to Thomas Icely, 16 May 1889, proposing the cultivation of flowers for perfume on the Island, and a copy of Mary Field's will (for which Wilson was the executor), 1881.
