    The Australian Agricultural Company was founded in 1824 to develop the fine wool industry and to cultivate produce, such as grapes and olives, previously imported from Mediterranean countries. It was granted one million acres and had its headquarters at Port Stephens. In 1830, land at Port Stephens was exchanged for land at Liverpool Plains and the Peel River, near Tamworth. In 1853 a subsidiary company, the Peel River Land and Mineral Company was formed to develop the Peel River land which was known as Goonoo Goonoo. The Company held this land until 1985. The Colonial Agricultural Company is the present owner of Goonoo Goonoo station.
