  • General note

Reaching 50 metres, Culwulla Chambers at King & Castlereagh Streets became Sydneys tallest building in 1912. It contained fourteen storeys and required special permission to build. Designed by Spain, Cosh and Minnett, it cost a record 100,000 pounds. The controversial building raised an outcry that Sydney would develop a New York style skyline. It was considered a fire hazard as fire ladders couldnt reach that height and citizens were worried about the prospect of darkened streets. A subsequent amendment to the building regulations prohibited the erection of buildings taller than 45 metres - a regulation which was in force until 1959 when the A.M.P. building was constructed at Circular Quay.
