  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Winston George Lewis (1937-1996), historian, was born at Coffs Harbour, N.S.W.. He was educated at Fort Street Boys' High School and at the universities of Sydney, (B.A. Hons) and Hong Kong (M.A.). At the end of 1963 he enrolled for a Ph.D, which he did not complete, at the University of Washington, Seattle, and also taught part-time there in South-East Asian studies.

Lewis returned from abroad in 1968 to take up a teaching postion in Chinese history at Macquarie University. His earlier research interests had concentrated on the early T'ang Dynasty and traditional Chinese historiography. He developed a new interest in the area of Sino-Australian contacts prior to the Pacific War. While preparing for a course in Modern East Asia for 1969, Lewis became increasingly interested in the career of William Henry Donald, an Australian journalist in China from 1903-1940. Donald had been adviser to the 'Young Marshal', Chang Hsueh-liang, from 1928-1935, and thereafter adviser to Chiang Kai-shek and Madame Chiang.

The fact that W. H. Donald's personal papers had been largely lost or destroyed did not prove an insurmountable obstacle to Lewis. He conducted extensive research into locating Donald's surviving Chinese and Western colleagues, as well as searching archival institutions around the world for relevant holdings on his subject. He wrote the entry on Donald for the Australian Dictionary of Biography (vol. 8). Lewis' proposed new biography which intended radically to revisit and augment E. A. Selle's book, Donald of China (1948), never eventuated.
