  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Hilton Hovell (1786-1875), sailor, explorer and settler, arrived in Sydney in 1813. In 1814 he joined a company led by Simeon Lord to trade in New Zealand flax. The following year the brig Trial, commanded by Hovell, and the schooner Brothers, under Captain William Burnett, sailed to New Zealand. At an anchorage which they named Trials (or Trial) Harbour the ships were attacked by Maoris in canoes, probably following a disagreement over the delivery of flax. Several men were killed and wounded. Hovell left the sea in about 1816, taking up residence at Narralling (Narellan). In 1824 he and Hamilton Hume set out from Hume's property near Gunning on an overland expedition to Westernport. On 16 December 1824 they sighted Corio Bay in Port Phillip, which they believed to be Westernport. Their journey opened the way for the settlement of Port Phillip. Hovell made a sea voyage to Westernport in 1826-1827. After Hovell was feted on a visit to Geelong in 1853, Hume became convinced that his contribution to the discovery of Victoria had been overlooked. In 1855 he released a pamphlet setting out his version of the 1824-25 expedition. Hovell replied with a publication of his own.
