    The Scottish Martyrs were Scottish political reformers transported to New South Wales after being convicted of sedition. Despite public protests at the severity of the sentences, Home Secretary Henry Dundas authorised their removal and they left England in the 'Surprize' in April 1794.

    4 Mar. 1794; Letter from Hugh Warrender to Henry Dundas. There are three documents enclosed: two concern the appointment of juries; the third is annotated 'Copy of letters from the Revd. Mr Fyshe Palmer to Messrs. Skirving and Muir, the originals found in Skirving's possession when apprehended in Decemr. 1793, were produced at trial of Skirving and are lying in Justiciary Office'. The letters from Palmer are dated 28 Aug., 16 Sept., 26 Sept, 8 Oct. 1793

  • General note

    Documents 14 Dec. 1793 to 4 Mar. 1794 are those of Henry Dundas and were acquired from Dobell's in 1937; documents 1795-1796 and 1814 are a different provenance, acquired in 1936-1937.
