Textual Records - (manuscript) - ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORYIn May 1801 Governor Philip Gidley King bought the brig 'The Harbinger', renamed it 'Norfolk' and employed it in carrying despatches and stores to Norfolk Island. William House was appointed commander in November 1801 and sailed to Tahiti for a cargo of salt pork. While anchored at Matavai Bay the ship was caught in a severe storm, and was beached to save the cargo.
