  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    C. J. Dennis began writing for the Bulletin in 1913. His relationship with George Robertson began with the publication by Angus & Robertson of `The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke' in 1915. Its great success led to other publishing ventures.
By 1921 the popularity of Dennis' books had waned which prompted him to write this book for children, and the young at heart, in an attempt to generate income. Although it was intended that Hal Gye would illustrate `A Book for Kids', the book was published using Dennis' own illustrations.
This volume has been bound in half green morocco, typical of the binding used by George Robertson for much of his publishing archive (see MLMSS 314). Apparently Robertson kept this volume separate from the archive of Angus & Robertson, when it was sold to the Mitchell Library, for the personal use of his daughter.
