    John Harris (1754-1838), surgeon, arrived in Sydney on the 'Surprize' in June 1790. In 1793 he bought James Ruse's farm and built Experiment Farm Cottage. He was made a magistrate in 1800.
  • Scope and Content
    20 March 1791; Letter, signed by John Harris, to an unnamed correspondent. Harris describes the settlements at Port Jackson, Rose Hill [Parramatta] and Norfolk Island; the appearance and habits of the Aboriginal inhabitants of Port Jackson and the spearing of Governor Arthur Phillip at Manly; birds, animals and plants at Sydney and Norfolk Island; and refers to his refusal to accept an appointment to Norfolk Island. He refers to himself as 'a pupil of yours'.
    Aug. 1791; Letter to Captain William Hill at Norfolk Island. Harris refers to promotions and new appointments in the New South Wales Corps and the formation of two additional companies; advises Hill to keep on friendly terms with Major Ross and other officials at Norfolk Island; and criticises the conduct of Capt. Nepean at Rose Hill. The letter is incomplete, unsigned and undated. The date has been ascertained by Harris' reference to the arrival in Sydney 'on Monday last' of the ship Matilda.
